What started as a young musician’s audition quickly turned into a beautiful mother-and-son performance.

Cole explained that his mother was one of the biggest reasons he had followed his musical path. Judy had once dreamed of pursuing music herself, but she put that dream aside to raise and support her family.

For Cole, standing on the AGT stage was also a way of honoring everything she had sacrificed.

As the two began performing, it was clear that this wasn’t simply a singer and a musician sharing a stage. They had a genuine connection that came through in every part of the performance.

By the end, the audience and judges were on their feet.

Mel B praised Cole’s distinctive voice and the way he made the Coldplay classic his own. Howie Mandel was deeply touched by the relationship between Cole and his mother, while Sofía Vergara also praised the emotional connection between them.

Then came Simon Cowell.

Simon initially suggested that Cole could have auditioned by himself, causing the audience to boo. But he quickly explained that he wasn’t criticizing Judy’s presence.

Instead, Simon liked that Cole had chosen to do things his own way.

He believed Cole was talented enough to stand on his own, but bringing his mother onto the stage made the audition more interesting and memorable.

In the end, Simon joined the other judges in giving Cole and Judy a yes, sending them through to the next stage.

The Mother Who Helped Inspire His Dream

Judy wasn’t simply there for an emotional moment.

She has a serious musical background of her own. She is a classically trained cellist with a master’s degree in music.

But her life eventually took a different direction. She later worked as a Labor and Delivery nurse for more than 15 years, putting her own musical ambitions behind her while focusing on her family.

Cole had been building his own musical career for years.

He started writing music in high school and began independently producing his own work in 2018. Over time, he developed into a singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer and audio engineer.

Before AGT, he had spent around four years performing at smaller venues around Los Angeles. He also performed on the streets as a busker, gaining experience wherever he could.

So when he finally reached the AGT stage, he wasn’t an overnight singer looking for a lucky break.

He had been working toward this moment for years.

And he wanted his mother there because she had been part of that journey from the beginning.

What Happened After AGT?

Cole and Judy’s journey didn’t end with their first audition.

They returned for the quarterfinals and performed Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” once again with Cole singing and playing guitar and Judy accompanying him on cello.

The judges again noticed their special connection, and there were even some funny moments about Cole performing a romantic song with his mother sitting beside him.

Unfortunately, they didn’t receive enough votes to move on to the semifinals, so their America’s Got Talent journey ended in the quarterfinals.

But Cole continued making music after the show.

In 2025, he released his five-song EP Soul Center, building on the independent career he had started long before AGT.

His music focuses on personal experiences, relationships, emotional growth and self-discovery, and his songs have collected millions of streams.

And his musical partnership with Judy has continued.

In 2026, Cole released new songs including “Fix You,” “My Alexandra,” “just human” and “Learning To.” His July 2026 release “Learning To” once again features Judy’s cello.

So while Cole didn’t take home the AGT trophy, something much more personal came from his time on the show.

He got to stand on one of the world’s biggest stages with the woman who helped inspire his love of music.

And years after Judy put her own musical dreams aside, she is now making music alongside her son.

Now, let’s take a moment to enjoy Cole and Judy’s full AGT performance.

The America’s Got Talent stage was a big moment for 23-year-old Cole Swensen, but he knew from the start that he wanted to share it with someone who meant much more to …
